What Is A DSP?

Direct Support Professionals are people who work directly with people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities with the aim of assisting the individual to become integrated into his/her community or the least restrictive environment.



What Does An All-Star DSP at Embracing Abilities Do?

An All Star DSP is an experienced caregiver that may be a college student or someone that works in the human services field. An All Star DSP works with our Embracing Abilities consumers and their families to provide care and support for the consumer. DSP’s may provide assistance in one of the following ways; homework assistance, meal preparation, bathing, socialization, community outings, ensuring safety and age appropriate play.

What Individuals Do You Work with as a DSP at Embracing Abilities?

Embracing Abilities clients may have intellectual or developmental disabilities. Some of the consumers you work with may have ADHD, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, and other I/DD diagnoses. Our clients range in age from 2 years old to 65. Generally our All-Stars work with individuals between the ages of 2 to 18.

Requirements For Employment:

  1. Current College Student in a Human Service Field (Medical, Nursing, Therapy (OT, PT, SLP), Social Work, Education, etc), Teacher or Assistant
  2. Work A Minimum of 20 Hours a Month

Documentation & Requirements:

  • A smart phone or device with cellular and/or internet service.
  • An email address that is checked regularly as all communication will come via email.
  • Notes are required to be submitted within 24 hours of the end of a shift.
  • Valid Drivers License
  • Valid Auto Insurance Card
  • Social Security Card/Passport or Other Approved Identify Verification Document
  • Resume
  • Diploma/Transcript
  • Tuberculosis Screening (Negative)
  • CPR/First Aid Card (Front and Back) – Must Be An IN PERSON Certification
  • County Criminal History Record from each county of residence and or employment from the last 3 years.* (This can be obtained from the local Sheriff’s Department)
  • State (Limited) Criminal History Report (Click To Obtain Online For a Fee of $16.32)

*The above requirements are required by the State of Indiana to provide direct support professional care per the IAC 460.

**DSPs are responsible for any fees associated with obtaining and maintaining the above requirements.

Training:

The Indiana Administrative Code 460 requires each Contractor/Caregiver to complete Annual In-Service Training.

The required in-service training includes, but is not limited to, the following subject matters:

•Respect and Dignity (Individual Rights, Prevention of Abuse and Neglect)

•PSCISP Training

•Communication Training

•Documentation

•Health Care Coordination (Medication Training)

•Universal Precautions

Embracing Abilities is proud to offer online training to our DSPs. DSPs are invited to our online training program once the initial required documentation are received and verified by our Human Resource department.

Compensation:

You will receive payments of $16.00 per hour for Respite (RSPO), Personal Assistant Care Services (PAC), and Residential Habilitation Services (RHS).

Please Note: All notes must be submitted within 72 hours of services being provided AND within the appropriate pay week. If notes are submitted after the payroll cut off (Sundays) notes may not be billed to the state or paid to the contractor, this is at the discretion of Embracing Abilities.
